A winter coat is a must-have.
Does your coat have a small button on the back? This button is called a "strength button."
Before I started working in this industry, I thought it was a spare button. But it is too small, and it doesn't seem suitable as a spare button either.
Today, let's uncover what it is. We're talking about the small button on the inside of your clothes, the role of the "strength button."
A strength button — button washer — actually serves to support the front button of a garment.. There are two types: one for thick fabrics such as coats, and one for thinner fabrics. Have you ever had a button come loose or fall off and leave a hole in the fabric? By attaching a strength button — button washer — to the fabric, you can protect the fabric and prevent holes from forming.
If you do not attach a strength button, the pressure on the thread becomes high. By attaching a washer, the strength button reduces the pressure the front button's thread puts on the fabric.
If you do not attach a strength button, the force on the thread concentrates on one point, creating a great amount of force.
Buttons are usually small, between 8 and 10 mm, but their surface area is many times larger than thread alone, so they can disperse the force. (The larger the contact area, the lower the pressure.)
What kind of strength buttons or washers should be used?
Because they are used on the back side of a button, in an inconspicuous place, buttons with simple designs are usually used. Polyester two-hole buttons are the standard choice.
Sometimes, decorative shell buttons can also be used as strength buttons.
Even hidden details should be refined. Shell buttons are often used on high-quality garments, and this is one of the details that sets them apart from other clothing.
