Hello, I’m Kayaba from the ApparelX division.
Today, as the title suggests, I’ll introduce IRIS pearl buttons and pearl hardware.
The IRIS maker page is here.
The IRIS pearl button & hardware product list is here.
Simply put, they are buttons/hardware made to resemble real pearls.
Because they give a feminine impression, they are often associated with occasion wear and women’s styles, but simply using pearl buttons on colorful high-gauge knitwear can change the look to something softer and less casual.

Even when we say pearl buttons, there are several types of materials used, and characteristics such as whether they can be dyed vary depending on the material.
Below, I’ll introduce the representative materials used for pearl buttons.
This may be a material designation used only by IRIS, but it is made by processing urea-based material to resemble the color and shape of a pearl.
Since it is made pearl-like with a coating, there is a possibility that the base material will show if the coating peels off.
It is also not a dyeable material.

This is a resin button based on urea. It is characterized by excellent heat resistance and light resistance.
Rather than a coating, the material itself has a pearl-like color. (Not dyeable)
As a note, urea resin contains formaldehyde, so it cannot be used for clothing for infants under 2 years old.
Also, long soaking washes (overnight, etc.) may soften the buttons and cause cracking or chipping.

Nylon resin generally has the characteristic of being highly dyeable.
It is also used for combination products that pair resin’s elasticity with plated hardware and other materials.

Comparing the photos, the IP and UF materials feel closer to real pearls than the PA material products.
However, PA material is appealing for the dyeability of the pearl section and for combinations with different materials that make use of its elasticity.
If you have a rough understanding of each material’s characteristics, choosing the right product for your purpose should become much easier.
Because of their characteristics, pearl buttons are basically shank buttons.
As the name suggests, it is a button with a shank attached. The thread and buttonholes are not visible from the front, and this shape is often used for highly decorative buttons such as metal buttons.
Round shank button

The shank shape is round.
Square shank button

The shank shape is angular.
Tunnel shank (tunnel hole) button

This is a button with a tunnel-like hole in part of its shape.
As for usage, it cannot be said definitively, but for knit products, tunnel shank buttons often seem to be used for durability reasons.
Above all, isn’t it the wide variety?
From classic pearl buttons to highly designed buttons, and for hardware items, they also offer zipper pull tabs, spring hooks, quilt items, and more.
