What is Koyaguchi Pile?

From https://www.koyaguchi.com/about/what-pile/

Koyaguchi Pile is a traditional textile from the area centered on the former Koyaguchi Town in Wakayama Prefecture (now Koyaguchi Town, Hashimoto City) and the surrounding region (Hashimoto City, Kudoyama Town, and Katsuragi Town), and it is characterized by its ability to provide a wide variety of textiles.

Its history as a production area began with cotton textiles in the Edo period. The history of Koyaguchi Pile began in the early Meiji period, building on the background of active sericulture and weaving, when Mr. Yasusuke Maeda proposed a method for producing a special woven fabric called “saori.” In the Taisho period, seal fabric was developed, and in the Showa period it grew alongside the development of synthetic fibers. Even today, they continue working on new applications.

What is saori? — Saori originated from chenille fabric in Europe, including the Czech Republic and Germany, and was brought to Japan in the early Meiji period. Yasusuke Maeda, who was born in Koyaguchi, Wakayama Prefecture, obtained this beautiful fabric and, after much effort to somehow create it himself, devised a machine from scratch and created Japan’s own saori. Saori is a very labor-intensive and painstaking fabric in which a woven fabric is first cut lengthwise to make pile thread, and then this pile thread is woven again as the weft thread to recreate the pattern. The saori method, devised around 1877, was exported overseas as tablecloths and curtains from the Meiji period through the Taisho period and the early Showa period, where it was well received.

About the materials

For the fur (wool) section, acrylic and modacrylic are used, as they have the closest texture to animal fur among synthetic fibers.

Differences between acrylic and modacrylic

The following is a quotation.

Polyacrylonitrile-based synthetic fibers are classified into “acrylic” and “modacrylic.” Fibers containing 85% or more acrylonitrile by mass are “acrylic,” while those with 35–85% are “modacrylic.” “Modacrylic” has excellent flame resistance because vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride are copolymerized, and it is used for flame-retardant products (fire-resistant fabrics, blankets, carpets, curtains, etc.) and wigs.
