I'm Hirama, an American returnee kid!

I'm excited for the Obon holiday and my business trip to Korea.

Lately I've been watching a lot of Slow Living videos on Instagram and elsewhere, so this time I'll talk briefly about sustainability!

Sustainability in Fashion: The Movement Toward Conscious Style

The fashion industry has long had a negative impact on the environment and society. Mass production, the use of harmful chemicals, and unethical labor practices are just some of the issues facing this glamorous industry. However, as more consumers demand change, the fashion world is beginning to respond.

Sustainability is no longer a buzzword; it is essential. From designers to consumers, awareness is growing about the impact our clothing choices have on the planet. Brands are increasingly adopting eco-friendly practices, using sustainable materials, and prioritizing ethical production.

So, how can we make a difference?

  • Research: Websites like Good On You provide detailed ratings based on a brand's environmental and social impact. They are a great starting point for finding ethical fashion.
  • Invest in quality: Choose well-made items that last, and reduce the need for frequent replacements.
  • Use resale: Extend the life of clothing by using thrift stores and online resale platforms.
  • Care for your clothes: Proper care can significantly extend the life of garments.

The fashion industry still has a lot of room for improvement, but some brands are making major progress. Notable examples include:

  • Patagonia: Known for its commitment to environmental activism, Patagonia uses recycled materials and supports Fair Trade.
  • Eileen Fisher: Focused on timeless design and sustainable materials, it puts a strong emphasis on recycling and upcycling.
  • Stella McCartney: A pioneer in luxury sustainable fashion, she does not use animal-derived materials and is committed to ethical production.

In addition, conscious shopping on the consumer side is important. It is important not to blindly follow trends, but to buy items you really need and choose things you can use and love for a long time. Avoiding impulse purchases and valuing what we have is the first step toward sustainable fashion.

Even small steps can make a big difference.

By making conscious choices and supporting sustainable brands, we can help create a more ethical and environmentally friendly fashion industry.
