Definition and Overview

Brown lip shell is a button material made from natural shell, also commonly called brown lip shell. It is characterized by its ground color ranging from brown tones to dark brown, and by the luster of the nacre that appears on the surface. Even within the same product number, there are individual differences in color tone and pattern.

It is a type of shell button, but it looks different from the bright white of white mother of pearl shell or the dark luster of black mother of pearl shell. It is chosen when a calm color that blends with textile and the natural look of the material are desired.

Material and Shape

Brown lip shell buttons are made by carving shell, and many are flat two-hole or four-hole shapes. The cat-eye shape, which has grooves between the holes, is used to let sewing thread sit neatly on the surface and reduce thread abrasion.

Some products also have shank buttons with legs on the back. Hole buttons are easy to match with shirts and other light to medium-weight textiles, while shank buttons create a gap between the button and the garment body, so they are also used for slightly thicker textiles and decorative specifications.

  • Because it is a natural material, there are variations in color depth, luster, speckles, and thickness.
  • Although shell is hard, it may chip or crack from impact.

Size Indication

Button dimensions are shown in millimeters and also in lignes. Lignes are a conventional unit for buttons, and in orders and specifications it is important to list them together with millimeter notation to avoid misunderstandings.

For brown lip shell, typical handling examples range from about 8 millimeters to 23 millimeters. However, when selecting, confirm not only the diameter but also the thickness, hole diameter, number of holes, and back shape using an actual sample.

Main Uses and Attachment Method

It is used for the front openings and cuffs of shirts, blouses, dresses, cardigans, and lightweight garments. Because it makes use of the natural luster, it is suitable not only for solid and natural-fiber-like textiles, but also for designs that want to add a material feel through trims.

Hole buttons are sewn on with button-sewing thread, and root wrapping is done as needed. Root wrapping is a method of creating a thread shank between the button and the textile, making it easier to accommodate textile thickness. In areas subject to heavy load, a reinforcing button may also be attached on the reverse side.

Handling and Precautions

Suitability for washing and dry cleaning is determined not by the button alone, but by the care label and trim specifications of the entire product. Strong impact, contact with other hard trims, and excessive load during spin drying can cause chipping or cracking, so caution is needed.

When ironing, avoid applying the hot iron directly to the button. Over long use or depending on storage conditions, the surface luster and apparent color may change. Before commercialization, check the appearance under washing, dry cleaning, and pressing conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between brown lip shell and black mother of pearl shell?

Both are materials for natural shell buttons, but brown lip shell is generally used for its brownish ground color appearance, while black mother of pearl shell is used for a darker appearance with deeper luster. Because they are natural materials, the actual color tone and pattern differ from piece to piece.

Can brown lip shell buttons be machine washed at home?

Whether home washing is possible is judged not only by the button, but by the material of the entire garment, the sewing specification, and the care label. During washing, it is necessary to avoid collisions with other hard trims and to prevent chipping or cracking from strong mechanical action or prolonged processing.

How do you specify the size of brown lip shell buttons?

Specify the diameter in millimeters, and list lignes if necessary. In addition, if you include the number of holes, hole diameter, thickness, whether it has a cat-eye shape, and whether it has a shank in the specification sheet, it becomes easier to confirm the sewing method and compatibility with the buttonhole.
