Definition and Overview

Moisture permeability is a performance measure that shows how much water vapor generated by evaporation of sweat can pass through the textile to the outside. In general, the higher the value, the easier it is to release moisture inside clothing, and it is considered helpful in reducing stuffiness during exercise or in rainy conditions.

Moisture permeability depends not only on the textile itself, but also on the overall structure, including coatings, laminates, membranes, and linings. Because results vary depending on the test method and sample conditions, it is important to confirm that the comparison is made under the same test conditions.

Features and Wearing Comfort

Materials with high moisture permeability are less likely to trap water vapor inside clothing after sweating, helping reduce stickiness and chill. However, moisture permeability does not directly indicate the feel against the skin, thickness, gloss, drape, or other visual and textural qualities.

Textile breathability refers to how easily air passes through, while water absorption refers to the property of absorbing liquid water, so they differ from moisture permeability. Even waterproof textiles with low breathability may be given moisture permeability by using a layer that selectively lets water vapor pass through.

Main Applications

Moisture permeability is emphasized in outerwear, rainwear, sportswear, outdoor wear, uniforms, and similar items where stuffiness caused by sweating and temperature changes can be an issue. In particular, for items with waterproof and windproof performance, it is checked as a feature that helps maintain the clothing environment.

Even in lightweight clothing for spring and summer, moisture permeability affects comfort in applications involving layering or high activity levels. On the other hand, in designs with many openings or in thin fabrics with high breathability, not only moisture permeability but also the overall ventilation design of the garment affects wearing comfort.

Selection and Handling Notes

When selecting materials, check moisture permeability together with water pressure resistance, breathability, water repellency, heat retention, and stretch. For applications that need protection from rain, consider waterproof and breathable specifications; for applications with high perspiration, consider the balance according to the wearing situation, including breathability and quick-drying performance.

Washing, friction, and adhesion of sebum or dirt may change the performance of textiles using water-repellent layers or membranes. Follow the care label and textile handling instructions, and reconfirm performance if necessary. Moisture permeability itself does not indicate shrinkage, so dimensional changes must be checked separately.

During sewing, water may enter through needle holes and seams, so for products that also require waterproof performance, consider sealing with seam tape or similar methods. Since textiles with layers bonded by heat or pressure may change in appearance or bonding condition depending on sewing and pressing conditions, preliminary testing is important.

Differences from Similar Terms

Moisture permeability is the ability to pass water vapor, breathability is the ability to pass air, and water absorption is the ability to absorb liquid water. Absorbent quick-drying refers to a function that draws up moisture such as sweat and helps it spread and dry, and it may be evaluated together with moisture permeability.

Waterproof and breathable refers to a function or specification that makes it difficult for liquid water such as rain to pass through while allowing water vapor to pass through. Moisture permeability is one of the performance items in that structure, and high moisture permeability alone does not mean the product is waterproof overall.

Frequently Asked Questions

If moisture permeability is high, will it always feel cool?

Not necessarily. Moisture permeability is a performance for releasing water vapor, and the felt comfort also depends on breathability, material thickness, heat retention, garment ease, opening design, and activity level. It is important to check multiple performance factors according to the application.

Which should be prioritized, moisture permeability or breathability?

If you want to reduce stuffiness while maintaining windproof or waterproof performance, moisture permeability is important. For summer clothing where coolness from airflow is desired, breathability is also important. Choose a combination based on the usage environment and the protective performance required, such as for rainy conditions, sports, or everyday wear.
