Definition and Overview

Non-fluorescent is a label indicating that fluorescent whitening agents used to enhance whiteness have not been used. Fluorescent whitening agents absorb ultraviolet light and make items appear bluish white, affecting the appearance of white and light-colored items.

For buttons, it is treated as a characteristic related to raw materials and manufacturing specifications, not a term describing the material name, number of holes, presence of a shank, or size. The non-fluorescent label alone does not determine a button’s strength, heat resistance, or lead-free status.

Relationship to Button Materials and Structure

Non-fluorescent does not limit the material. Whether it is resin, shell, natural material, metal, or another material must be confirmed separately. It also has no direct relation to hole shapes such as two-hole, four-hole, or cat’s eye, or to structures such as shank or tunnel shank.

Even buttons made of the same material and shape may or may not be non-fluorescent depending on manufacturing conditions. In accessory specifications, it is easier to confirm if the material, color, shape, dimensions, and whether non-fluorescent is required are listed as separate items.

Size Indication and Applications

Button size is generally expressed by diameter in mm or ligne, but being non-fluorescent does not indicate size. When placing an order, confirm the required diameter, thickness, hole diameter, or shank specification separately from the non-fluorescent requirement.

For white or light-colored buttons, checking the color tone when placed alongside the textile and other accessories is important. They may be used for garments for which this specification is required in planning, such as shirts, blouses, underwear, baby and kids’ clothing, and uniforms.

Handling and Label Verification

Non-fluorescent is not a label guaranteeing resistance to washing, dry cleaning, or ironing. Cracking, deformation, discoloration, or changes in surface finish due to washing or cleaning vary depending on the button material, dyeing or coating, and usage conditions.

Before mass production, combine the actual item with the textile and conduct checks assuming washing, cleaning, and ironing processes. Even when non-fluorescent is required, it is important to share the test method, judgment conditions, and scope with the supplier and confirm consistency between the label and the specifications.

Differences from Similar Terms

Lead-free is a specification related to the use of lead, and it is a separate item from non-fluorescent, which indicates whether fluorescent whitening agents are used. If both specifications are required, confirm each one separately.

Impact resistance is a performance related to resistance against cracks and chips caused by impact. Non-fluorescent does not necessarily mean impact resistant, so select it separately according to the application and washing conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are non-fluorescent buttons buttons that do not emit fluorescence at all?

Generally, this refers to not using fluorescent whitening agents, or to a specification that limits their use. However, confirmation methods and judgment conditions may differ depending on the supplier or application. If necessary, confirm the target area, verification method, and judgment criteria in advance.

If a button is non-fluorescent, will it not discolor or break during washing or ironing?

Non-fluorescent is a specification related to fluorescent whitening agents and does not indicate washing durability, heat resistance, or dry-cleaning resistance. Behavior varies depending on the material and surface treatment, so accessory testing and actual item verification matched to product conditions are necessary.
