Definition and Overview

Softening finish is a finishing process applied after the manufacture of woven fabric and knitwear, using softeners and similar agents to reduce friction between fibers and soften stiffness. Rather than changing the inherent properties of the material, it is carried out to adjust the feel when touched and ease of handling.

It is also called soft finish. Depending on the processing method, chemicals used, material, and processing conditions, the resulting texture varies, such as a plump softness, smooth feel, or drape.

Characteristics

Fabric treated with a softening finish generally feels soft to the touch and has a smooth surface. For fabrics with a firm hand, it suppresses stiffness and makes them easier to wear, and for lightweight fabrics it may enhance supple drape.

The effect on appearance depends on the finishing content, but it may smooth surface fuzz or create a natural drape. On the other hand, if the treatment is strong, the fabric may feel less crisp and less resilient.

The effects on absorbency, static electricity, and friction vary depending on the material and the type of softener. It is important to confirm not only softness, but also compatibility with the functions and quality required for the intended application.

Main Applications

It is used for garments where feel against the skin and comfort are important, such as shirts, blouses, cut-and-sew tops, dresses, underwear, and nightwear. For natural fibers such as linen and cotton, it is sometimes adopted to achieve a soft, washed-out look.

For lightweight fabrics intended for spring and summer, it is used to improve breathability and suppleness, while for fuzzy materials and knits intended for autumn and winter, it is used to add fullness and a gentle hand. However, it is not limited to any season and is selected according to the material and product concept.

Selection and Handling Notes

When selecting fabric, check a sample of the finished texture and judge the required firmness, drape, and sewability against the specifications. Even with the same composition and structure, the hand feel may change depending on processing conditions and lot, so confirmation on fabric close to mass production is necessary.

Softening finish is not a process that suppresses shrinkage. Dimensional change after washing depends on the material, structure, presence or absence of shrink-resistance processing, and similar factors, so separately check shrinkage tests and washing instructions. If necessary, consider pre-washing or straightening the fabric before cutting.

Soft and slippery fabrics may shift during cutting or stretch and cause puckering during sewing. Test the compatibility of presser foot pressure, feed, needle and thread, and interfacing in advance, and adjust sewing conditions.

  • The softening effect may change with repeated washing.
  • Strong friction or excessive drying may lead to changes in texture or fuzz.
  • Whether softener can be used during washing should follow the product's care label and material characteristics.

Differences from Similar Terms

Softening finish is a finishing process whose main purpose is to make fabric softer. Shrink-resistance processing is a treatment that suppresses dimensional change caused by washing and similar factors, so the purpose is different. Both may be applied, but softening finish alone does not necessarily prevent shrinkage.

Fuzzing is a process that raises fibers on the fabric surface to create nap and produce warmth retention and a soft appearance. Softening finish does not necessarily create fuzz; it mainly adjusts fiber slipperiness and hand feel. The texture is related, but the processing method and surface change are different.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does softening finish make fabric less likely to shrink?

The main purpose of softening finish is to soften the texture, not to suppress shrinkage. Shrinkage after washing depends on the type of fiber, structure, dyeing and finishing conditions, and whether shrink-resistance processing has been applied. Check the fabric specification shrinkage rate and conduct a pre-test if necessary.

Is fabric with softening finish harder to sew?

Depending on the processing, slippery fabrics with little body may be more prone to shifting during cutting and to stretching during sewing. Adjust feed and presser foot pressure with test sewing, and if necessary use stay tape or interfacing to help stabilize sewing.
