Definition and Overview

Wash fastness is a property used to evaluate changes in color when a textile is exposed to water, detergent, temperature, mechanical action, and similar factors during washing, as well as staining on attached white cloth and other materials. It is an important checkpoint when handling dark colors, vivid colors, textile color combinations, and prints.

In evaluation, the color change of the original textile itself and the color transfer to contacting fibers are checked separately. Therefore, it is judged not only in terms of being less likely to fade, but also in terms of being less likely to stain other garments.

Appearance and Impact on Product Quality

If wash fastness is insufficient, repeated washing may make the color look dull or change the hue. Color may also transfer to light-colored sections, lining, accessories, or garments worn in layers.

Fastness does not directly indicate the handfeel, thickness, or stretch of a textile. However, because it is related to the type of dye, material, dyeing method, aftertreatment, and color depth, it is important at the planning stage to consider both the desired appearance and wash durability.

Main Applications and Products That Require Confirmation

Wash fastness is especially important to check for shirts, cut-and-sew tops, pants, dresses, uniforms, sportswear, and children's clothing intended for home laundering. Care is also needed for summer items that are likely to pick up sweat and body oil, and for everyday wear that is washed frequently.

Dark denim-like materials, color-blocked products, printed textiles, and designs combined with white or light colors require caution because color transfer is more noticeable. As a product, evaluation should include not only the outer material but also combinations with lining, tape, embroidery thread, labels, and similar components.

How to Choose and Handling Precautions

When selecting a textile, confirm the test conditions and evaluation results appropriate for the intended use with the textile supplier. Since results can vary depending on the washing method, clearly define in the specifications whether it is home laundering or commercial laundering, the type of detergent, washing temperature, and whether items are washed separately or with other garments.

During prototyping, carrying out washing tests in combination with the actual accessories and sewing thread to be used makes it easier to check the risk of bleeding and staining. For dark-colored items, consider washing instructions and care labels that advise separate washing during the initial washes so they match the product specifications.

  • Check not only color change before and after washing, but also staining on white cloth and light-colored sections.
  • Evaluate combinations such as color blocking with different materials, outer material and lining, and accessories.
  • Because shrinkage is a separate quality item from wash fastness, confirm it individually.

Differences from Similar Terms

Fastness is a general term for various types of durability against color-related effects. Wash fastness refers to performance against washing. Light fastness evaluates resistance to fading caused by light, while rub fastness evaluates resistance to color transfer caused by rubbing.

Bleeding refers to the phenomenon in which dye seeps out due to washing or moisture and transfers to contacting areas. Wash fastness is an indicator that evaluates this kind of risk, but the actual appearance varies depending on the product's material composition, sewing specifications, and washing conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

If wash fastness is good, does the color never fade?

Good wash fastness indicates that, under the specified test conditions, color change and staining are unlikely to occur. However, if the detergent, temperature, washing time, friction, or contact with other garments differs, color change or transfer may occur. It is necessary to follow the product's care label instructions.

Which should be checked first, wash fastness or rub fastness?

It depends on the application. For products that are washed frequently, wash fastness is important, but for products that often come into contact with bags, are worn in layers, or rub against seats, rub fastness is also important. For dark-colored items and color-blocked items with light colors, check both and judge the product as a whole.
