Definition and Overview

Antibacterial treatment is a process that adds functionality to fabric or products with chemicals or other agents to suppress the growth of bacteria on fibers. It does not mean that bacteria are immediately killed, and the target bacterial species, test methods, and performance after washing vary by treatment.

Antibacterial treatment is a similar term to antibacterial odor control, but the functionality promoted and the way it is evaluated are different. Antibacterial odor control focuses on suppressing the growth of bacteria and preventing odor generation, while antibacterial treatment is used when suppressing bacterial growth is emphasized for more hygienic applications.

Features

Antibacterial performance is usually not a treatment intended to change the appearance of patterns or colors. However, depending on the type and amount of treatment agent, the fabric material and structure, and combinations with aftertreatments, it may affect the texture, water absorbency, breathability, and shade of dyed colors.

Durability of the function varies depending on whether the agent is fixed to the fibers or blended into the fibers themselves. It is used for a wide range of materials such as cotton, polyester, and nylon, but material alone does not determine antibacterial performance.

  • This is a treatment intended to suppress bacterial growth.
  • Effects on odor, dirt, viruses, and fungi must be confirmed separately from antibacterial performance.
  • For labeling and promotional materials, confirm the target function and test basis according to the treatment specifications.

Main Applications

It is used for uniforms, workwear, clothing related to medical care and nursing, underwear, socks, bedding, and other items worn for long periods or used where hygiene considerations are necessary. In garments for sweaty seasons, it may be combined with moisture-absorbing quick-dry treatment.

It is also used in fabrics that take advantage of breathability, such as double raschel and mesh. It is selected according to the intended concept not only for spring and summer items, but also for innerwear close to the skin, nightwear, and year-round uniforms.

How to Choose and Handling Notes

When selecting, confirm the target bacteria, the test method for performance evaluation, wash durability, and the range of functions that can be indicated. It is also important to confirm the required number of durability cycles for the intended use and compatibility with combined functions such as moisture-absorbing quick-dry and odor resistance using fabric samples and specifications.

Antibacterial treatment itself does not necessarily increase or decrease fabric shrinkage. Shrinkage after washing is affected by the material, structure, dyeing and finishing, and drying method, so washing tests are performed before productization. Follow the washing instructions, and excessive heat or bleaching may affect treatment performance.

For sewing, set needle, thread, and sewing conditions suitable for the material, just as with ordinary fabrics. To avoid damaging the treated surface, if strong friction, excessive pressing, or washing after sewing is planned, confirm performance and appearance in advance.

Differences from Similar Terms

Antibacterial odor control is a function that suppresses the growth of bacteria and reduces odor generation on fibers. On the other hand, antibacterial treatment may be handled as performance that suppresses bacterial growth for applications that emphasize hygiene management. The distinction between the two and how they are labeled is determined by the test standards adopted and the treatment specifications.

Odor-control treatment aims to reduce odor components such as sweat and everyday smells, and does not directly indicate suppression of bacterial growth. Antiviral treatment also targets something different, so antibacterial treatment alone cannot indicate performance related to viruses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is antibacterial treatment the same as antibacterial odor control?

It is important not to treat them as the same. Both are related to suppressing bacterial growth, but antibacterial odor control mainly aims to suppress odor generation, while antibacterial treatment may emphasize suppressing bacterial growth for hygienic applications. When adopting it, confirm the test details and labeling scope.

Can fabrics with antibacterial treatment be machine washed at home?

Whether home washing is possible is not determined by antibacterial treatment alone. The appropriate washing method varies depending on the material, dyeing, other functional treatments, and product specifications. Check the wash durability conditions and washing instructions, and before productization, confirm shrinkage, appearance, and function using the intended washing method.

Can antibacterial treatment completely eliminate odors?

Antibacterial treatment is intended to suppress bacterial growth, so it is not a treatment that completely eliminates all odors. Odors have multiple causes, including sweat, sebum, fragrance, and external contamination. If odor resistance or deodorizing is also needed, confirm the performance tests and labeling conditions for each.
