Transparent Elastic
Transparent elastic is a flat elastic tape made mainly from transparent thermoplastic polyurethane, used as an auxiliary material to add gathers and stretch without being noticeable.

Definition and Overview
Transparent elastic is a narrow tape-like elastic that is transparent or semi-transparent. Taking advantage of its low visibility from the outer side of a garment, it is used to reinforce seam allowances, gather fabric, and prevent stretching at shoulder seams and necklines.
Material and Structure
Many are made from thermoplastic polyurethane, abbreviated as TPU. Unlike common woven elastic, knitted elastic, or braided elastic, which have elastic yarn covered with fibers, its defining feature is that it is a standalone film-like tape formed by shaping resin into a strip.
For that reason, it does not have a woven, knitted, or braided structure. While the surface is slippery, thin, and transparent, holes from sewing needles and strong friction may affect appearance and durability.
How Width and Stretch Are Expressed
Width is shown in millimeters, and narrower types are used for delicate specifications, while wider types are used where greater holding force is needed. Thickness, transparency, and stiffness also affect the final appearance and ease of sewing, so it is important not to choose based on width alone.
Stretch may be shown by the elongation rate, which indicates how far it can be stretched relative to its original length. In practical use, elongation recovery rate, which is the property of returning to the original length after stretching, and elongation stress, which is the force required when stretching, are also checked.
- For gather applications, clearly specify in the spec sheet the ratio between the product dimensions and the length of elastic to be sewn on.
- During prototyping, check recovery after sewing and after washing, waviness, and feel against the skin.
Main Applications
Taking advantage of its transparency, it is used for shoulder straps, lingerie such as bras, dance costumes, swimwear, and gathered sections of sheer garments. It is less likely to spoil the design of the outer fabric, and stitching it in allows localized stretch and holding power to be added.
It is also used by stitching it into stretchy necklines, armholes, and shoulder seams to stabilize the shape. However, although transparent elastic does have the function of limiting stretch, its purpose is different from that of stretch-stabilizing tape, which prevents stretch entirely.
Selection and Handling Notes
Select width, thickness, elongation stress, recovery, and transparency according to the application. On light fabrics, the stiffness of the elastic and sewing puckering are more likely to show on the surface, so check the seam allowance design and sewing conditions as well. It is also necessary to match the stretch direction and amount of stretch between the garment fabric and the elastic.
Polyurethane-based transparent elastic may be affected by heat, light, moisture, skin oil, detergent components, and other factors, and over time may yellow, become sticky, harden, crack, or lose elasticity. Store it away from high heat, humidity, and direct sunlight.
Whether it can be washed or tumble dried differs by product, so check the included care instructions. High-temperature ironing, tumble drying, and the use of strong bleach may accelerate deterioration, so it is important to carry out washing tests before mass production.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between transparent elastic and elastic webbing?
Transparent elastic is generally a transparent tape made mainly from TPU and does not have a woven or knitted structure. Elastic webbing refers to a flat elastic tape with elastic yarn covered by fibers, and its appearance, feel against the skin, handling during sewing, and durability differ.
Does transparent elastic deteriorate with washing?
Transparent elastic may lose elasticity or develop yellowing or stickiness depending on the usage environment, detergent, heat, and moisture. For products that are washed frequently or processed at high temperatures, confirm by conducting washing tests under actual fabric and sewing conditions.
What should be done if transparent elastic causes waviness when sewn?
The basic approach is not to pull the elastic too much and to keep the feed amount for the fabric and elastic even. Too much presser foot pressure, thread tension, or overly strong needle or stitch settings can also cause waviness. Perform sewing tests with offcuts and adjust the stretching ratio and conditions for the elastic.
