Definition and Overview

Custom zipper pulls are designed to suit the product or brand intent by tailoring the pull used by hand to open and close a zipper. They are given distinctiveness and decorative appeal through engraving, cutout lettering, resin molding, cord attachment, and similar methods.

The pull is a movable part attached to the slider, not a part that interlocks the teeth. Therefore, even if a custom zipper pull is adopted, the type of zipper itself, the tooth size, and the opening and closing method do not change.

Structure and Relationship to Zipper Parts

A standard zipper consists of left and right teeth, a zipper tape that supports the teeth, a slider that opens and closes the teeth, and top stops, bottom stops, or a separator pin that secure the ends. The pull is a part connected to the pull attachment section of the slider.

For custom orders, confirm that the hole and attachment-section dimensions and shape of the pull match the slider being used. Designing only the pull will not allow assembly if it does not fit the slider structure, and sufficient opening and closing performance will not be achieved.

  • Teeth: elements that mesh left and right to close the opening.
  • Slider: the part that opens and closes by bringing the teeth together or separating them.
  • Pull: the part held by hand to operate the slider.
  • Top stop, bottom stop, separator pin: parts that prevent the slider from coming off and handle the opening and closing ends.

Types and Specification Items

Custom zipper pulls include metal plate shapes, resin molded products, and cord-shaped types using strings or tape. In addition to flat logo expressions, three-dimensional shapes, surface gloss or roughness, color, plating, and coating are also considered as specifications.

In ordering specifications, clearly state the zipper type and tooth size to be attached, the compatible slider, the pull's outer dimensions, thickness, and weight, the logo expression method, color, and surface finish. The design of the pull and the length of the zipper body are separate specification items.

  • Closed zipper: the bottom end is closed and is used for pockets and skirts.
  • Open zipper: the bottom end can be separated and is used for front-opening outerwear.
  • Two way separator zipper: a specification that allows opening and closing from both top and bottom directions.
  • Double slider: a specification that uses two sliders so the opening position can be adjusted.

Applications and Selection Considerations

In outerwear, bags, sports and outdoor products, and uniforms, they are used for both operability and product identification. Small pulls tend to look neat, while large pulls and cord pulls are easier to grip, including when wearing gloves.

Before sewing, check with the actual product to make sure the pull does not interfere with the fabric, lining, placket, or storm flap. If the thickness or weight is too great, it may cause discomfort when worn, contact or impact, damage from swinging, or load on the slider.

For products intended for washing or dry cleaning, check changes in the surface finish, wear of coating or engraving areas, and scratches on other components. Zipper length is generally checked from the top stop to the bottom stop, and for a separator zipper, including the specified reference position; it is important not to confuse this with the length of the pull.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can only the custom zipper pull be replaced?

Whether the pull can be replaced depends on the slider structure and the shape of the attachment section. In some cases, only the pull can be replaced later, but opening the attachment section may affect the slider's function or strength. Before mass production, it is necessary to carry out an assembly test with the slider to be used.

What information is needed when specifying a logo pull?

In addition to the logo data, share the zipper type to be attached, tooth size, slider specifications, the pull's outer dimensions, thickness, color, finish, and operating environment. In particular, compatibility with the pull attachment section, interference with other accessories or fabric, and appearance changes after washing are confirmed with samples.

Should the size of the pull match the zipper length?

The size of the pull is determined not only by the zipper length, but also by a balance of tooth size, slider size, user operability, and the product application. Even on a long zipper, a small pull may be used, while even on a short zipper, a larger pull may be chosen for applications where it is operated while wearing gloves.
