Definition and position of the certification
Regenerative Organic is a certification that comprehensively addresses soil-regenerating farming methods, organic agriculture, animal welfare, labor conditions, and more for farmland and producers. It is not simply the name of a material promoted as environmentally friendly, nor the name of a weaving or processing method.
As a certification name, Regenerative Organic Certified is used. On the other hand, regenerative agriculture is a general term that broadly refers to the ideas and practices of regenerative farming, and does not necessarily mean that a specific third-party certification has been obtained.
Scope and how the criteria are understood
The standards emphasize management with an awareness of soil organic matter and biodiversity, organic cultivation that reduces reliance on chemicals, animal welfare when livestock are involved, and fairness for producers and workers. The scope of application differs depending on the raw material.
In apparel, the term regenerative cotton may be used to refer to cotton, but this certification is not limited to cotton. Also, certification alone cannot be used to judge physical properties such as fabric weight, strength, color fastness, and hand feel.
- Management aimed at soil health and regeneration
- An approach based on organic agriculture
- Consideration for animal welfare in livestock-derived raw materials
- Social fairness for producers and workers
Points to confirm when sourcing fabric and making products
When sourcing fabric, confirm whether the certification applies at the raw material stage, or whether the fabric has been managed as certified material through the supply chain including spinning, weaving, and dyeing. It is important to align the blend ratio, applicable lot, raw material origin, and the scope of traceable documents before placing an order.
Even if certified raw materials are used in a product, not all components and processes may be covered by the certification. Clearly specify in the specification sheet how far the claim will extend, including the outer fabric, lining, interlining, sewing thread, and accessories, and manage production so that no raw material is confused during the manufacturing stage.
- Confirm the name on the certificate, expiration date, and applicable raw materials.
- Confirm the correspondence with the purchased lot through transaction certificates and similar documents.
- Confirm the blend ratio and the share of certified raw materials.
- Conduct fabric quality tests separately from certification verification.
Difference from labeling and similar terms
When using the certification name or logo on hangtags, product descriptions, advertisements, and similar materials, confirm the labeling rules and usage permission of the certification program. Expressions such as "made with certified cotton" should not go beyond the range that can be proven. Before certification is obtained, do not label the entire product as certified.
Organic cotton is a term for material or raw material that refers to cotton grown organically. GOTS is a certification that covers organic textile products as well as processing and social criteria, while OCS is a certification used to verify organic content. Regenerative Organic is distinctive in that it evaluates farms including soil, animal welfare, and social aspects.
Frequently asked questions
Is regenerative cotton always organic cotton?
The term regenerative cotton alone does not allow you to determine whether it has organic certification or which certification scheme it falls under. If you want to confirm that it is cotton based on Regenerative Organic certification, check the certification name, applicable lot, and transaction certificate with the supplier.
If certified raw materials are used, can the finished product carry the certification logo?
Certification of the raw material alone does not necessarily permit logo display on the finished product. Confirm the management status in the supply chain, the conditions for products covered by the certification, the blend ratio, and whether label approval is required, and use it in accordance with the procedures set by the certification program.
Are GOTS and Regenerative Organic the same?
No, they are not the same. Both relate to organic raw materials, but GOTS is a standard that includes textile processing, while Regenerative Organic is a certification that emphasizes soil, animal welfare, and social fairness on farms. Confirm according to the scope of proof you need.
