Definition and Overview

Whiskers are a processing technique that replicates the fading that occurs along the radial wrinkles around the crotch and waist of jeans when worn. The name comes from the streaky fading that resemble whiskers.

Appearance and texture characteristics

With dark-colored denim, the contrast between the base color and the darker areas creates a sense of depth and a worn-in look. By adjusting the placement of the processing, the length of the lines, the shade, and the degree of abrasion, you can create looks ranging from natural aging to a strong vintage style.

The whiskering process is primarily for aesthetic purposes and does not impart any functional properties such as water absorption or heat retention. Depending on the processing method and intensity, the surface may become fuzzy, and the perceived thickness and stiffness of the fabric may change.

Main applications

It is mainly used in denim pants, especially around the crotch area of the front of jeans. It is also sometimes used in denim jackets, skirts, and overalls to create texture in areas that wrinkle during wear.

While this process isn't limited to a specific season, it pairs well with casual wear and vintage-inspired designs. It tends to be fading effective on materials that show a color difference between the surface and core, such as indigo-dyed denim or sulfur-dyed fabrics.

How to choose and precautions for handling

During the planning stage, we not only specify the shape of the whiskers, but also check the base fabric color, dyeing method, color difference after processing, and processing location using samples. This is because even with the same design, the appearance can change depending on differences in denim thickness, density, dye, and lot.

Washing may cause color fading and changes in texture, including in the treated areas. Dark-colored items should be washed separately, and follow the washing instructions. For materials that require shrinkage, the dimensions and shrinkage rate after processing will be checked and reflected in the pattern.

In sewing, we share a common reference position from cutting to finishing to ensure that the position and shading of the whiskers do not differ significantly between the left and right sides of the front panel. Since the way the processing is applied can vary easily around seams, pockets, and zipper, we define tolerances using specifications and processing samples.

Differences from similar terms

Honeycomb creases refer to fine horizontal wrinkles and fading that primarily appear behind the knee lining. While whiskering is mainly done around the crotch and waist, honeycomb creases differ in both the location and appearance.

"Used finish" is a broad term encompassing fading, scuffing, tearing, and staining. "Whiskering" is a part of this, referring to a process that creates streaky, worn-in fading. "Stonewash" is a type of washing process and does not refer to the whiskering pattern itself.

FAQ

What is the difference between beard processing and tripe processing?

Whiskers primarily refer to radial or horizontal fading around the crotch and waist. Honeycomb fading is a fine, horizontal wrinkle-like fading that mainly appears behind the knee lining. Both are expressions that mimic the changes in denim from wear, but they differ in location and shape.

Will distressed denim shrink?

The presence and degree of shrinkage vary depending on the material, dyeing, washing process, and drying conditions. When product washing is performed, it is important to use the dimensions after processing as a reference and to check the shrinkage rate, twisting, and color fading in a washing test before mass production.
