Definition and Material Features

A coconut button is made by cutting out and polishing the shell of the coconut fruit. It is characterized by color tones centered on brown to dark brown, with fibrous streaks and fine speckling, and even within the same product number there may be individual differences in appearance.

Because it uses a natural shell, it has a rustic, natural look that differs from the uniform gloss and color of resin buttons. It is important to treat the material’s natural pattern as part of the design and to confirm the color tone and texture with a product sample.

Hole and Shank Structure

Most are hole buttons with two or four holes on the surface. Two-hole styles are used for shirts and blouses, while four-hole styles are also used for plackets and outerwear. In cat-eye shapes with recessed areas around the holes, the sewing thread is easier to seat.

In addition to hole buttons, there are also shank buttons that pass thread through a shank on the back. A shank creates space between the button and the fabric, making it suitable for thicker fabrics and styles where the buttonhole needs extra thickness.

  • For lightweight fabrics, choose a smaller, lighter button to reduce stress on the fabric.
  • For thicker fabrics or areas with fusible interfacing at the front opening, match the thickness to the buttonhole size.
  • Before sewing, check that there are no chips or sharp edges around the holes.

How Sizes Are Expressed

Button size is shown not only by diameter in millimeters, but also in ligne. Ligne is a customary unit for buttons, and one ligne is generally approx. 0.635 mm. When ordering, check the actual diameter as well as the ligne notation.

The appearance of coconut buttons changes in presence and ease of threading depending on thickness, edge roundness, and hole size. Set the buttonhole dimensions based on the button’s maximum diameter and thickness, and confirm the opening and closing performance with a prototype first.

Main Applications

They are used for shirts, blouses, dresses, skirts, pants, cardigans, and outerwear for light garments, making use of their natural texture. They are often combined with fabrics that have a natural look, such as cotton, linen, and hemp.

They are easy to match with casual, resort, workwear, and craft-like designs, but depending on the color tone and surface finish, they can also be used as trim for neat shirts and jackets. Check the compatibility with the fabric, sewing thread, and the overall color of the product.

Attachment and Handling Notes

Hole buttons are sewn onto the fabric with button-sewing thread. When the fabric is thick or when you want the buttonhole to open and close more smoothly, make a thread shank to create a thread foot between the button and the fabric. If needed, add a backing button on the reverse side to withstand pulling forces.

Because it is a natural material, strong impact or excessive tightening may cause cracking or chipping. Suitability for washing, dry cleaning, and ironing should be checked not for the button alone, but as part of the garment specification, and product testing should be carried out before mass production.

Direct exposure to a hot iron, prolonged soaking, or treatment with strong chemicals may cause surface changes, color variation, or cracking. When ironing, use a pressing cloth and avoid the button.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between coconut buttons and nut buttons?

Both are plant-based natural-material buttons, but the raw materials differ. Coconut buttons use the shell of the coconut fruit and are characterized by dark brown colors and fibrous patterns. Nut buttons are mainly made from tagua palm seeds and are used for relatively smooth textures and dyeing effects.

Can coconut buttons be washed at home?

Suitability for washing depends on the button’s processing condition, the fabric, the sewing specification, and the detergent and washing conditions. Since natural materials also vary by individual piece, products intended for home washing should be tested in advance for cracking, chipping, discoloration, and sewing strength under the expected washing method.

How should the size of a coconut button be selected?

Select it by matching the buttonhole width at the intended location, the fabric thickness, the specification of the front opening and facing, and the desired design appearance. Verify the ligne and millimeter notation, confirm the button’s maximum diameter and thickness, and then check the opening and closing performance and balance with a prototype.
