Definition and Overview

Green Turbo Shell is a type of large sea snail shell, processed into buttons using the nacre on the inside of the shell. Unlike shell buttons that are mainly white, it is characterized by a deep luster with mixed greenish, brownish, and iridescent tones.

Because it is a natural material, there are individual differences in color, pattern, luster, and thickness. Even within the same product number, the appearance does not always match exactly, so it is a material whose natural character is treated as a design element.

Material and Structure

Green Turbo Shell buttons are often made as single-plate buttons cut and polished from the shell, and the surface may be given either a glossy finish or a matte finish. Because they have a layered shell-based structure, their light reflection and cross-sectional appearance differ from resin buttons.

Button hole shapes are generally two-hole or four-hole, and thin pierced styles are used for shirts and blouses. For designs with greater thickness, shank buttons with a sewing attachment on the back may also be used.

  • Two-hole / four-hole: a shape in which thread is passed through the holes and sewn to the fabric.
  • Shank: a shape that allows thread to pass through a shank on the back, making the sewing thread less visible on the front.
  • Single-plate: a type made by processing a solid plate cut from the shell.

How Size Is Expressed

The size of buttons is shown by diameter in millimeters, and also in lignes. Lignes are a traditional unit of measurement used for buttons, and when ordering, the correspondence between lignes and millimeters should be confirmed using the specification sheet or an actual sample.

Even with the same stated size, the appearance and fit in the buttonhole change depending on the rise of the edge, thickness, and hole position. It is important to confirm the buttonhole length in a prototype based on the button's maximum diameter and thickness.

Main Applications

Green Turbo Shell buttons are used for shirts, blouses, dresses, cardigans, and other items that make use of their natural luster. They are suitable not only for front closures but also as accents for cuffs, necklines, and pocket openings.

Those with deep tones are also used as decorative buttons for jackets and lightweight garments. However, for areas subject to strong load or applications that receive frequent impact, thickness and attachment strength should be considered in advance.

Attaching and Handling Notes

For pierced buttons, sewing them on with a slight thread shank between the button and the fabric makes it easier to accommodate the thickness of the fabric. For thin fabrics or positions subject to force, using a backing button on the reverse side is also effective. In addition to the fabric color, the match with the shell's tone should also be checked for the sewing thread.

Although shell is hard, it may crack or chip under strong impact or excessive tightening. Whether washing or dry cleaning is possible should follow the care label and accessory specifications for the entire product, not the button alone.

Do not apply a hot iron directly to the button; use a pressing cloth or iron around the button. Since bleach, strong alkaline detergents, acidic chemicals, and similar agents may affect the surface luster and color tone, confirm this through washing tests or cleaning tests before mass production.

Differences from Similar Terms

Shell button is a general term that includes mother of pearl shell, black mother of pearl shell, trochus shell, brown mother of pearl shell, and others. Green Turbo Shell is one of these material names, and its green-brown tones and substantial feel are key points when selecting it, unlike shells that are mainly white.

Abalone shell is also a shell material with nacreous luster, but the type of shell used is different from Green Turbo Shell. Do not fix the color or pattern based only on the material name; check the luster, color range, thickness, and hole specifications with an actual sample and use them accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Green Turbo Shell buttons be machine washed at home?

Whether home washing is possible cannot be judged uniformly for Green Turbo Shell buttons alone. Prioritize the care label based on the specifications of the garment fabric, interlining, sewing thread, and all accessories. For mass-produced items, confirm cracking, chipping, changes in luster, and thread breakage after washing through advance testing.

Do Green Turbo Shell buttons get damaged by dry cleaning?

The effects of cleaning solvents and finishing processes vary depending on the shell's processing condition and product specifications. Direct strong impact, contact with other accessories, and residue from chemicals can cause scratches and changes in luster. Before adoption, conduct testing under actual use conditions.

What is the difference between Green Turbo Shell buttons and ordinary shell buttons?

Ordinary shell button is a general material category, and Green Turbo Shell is one type within it. Green Turbo Shell is characterized by its tendency to show complex expressions that include not only white but also greenish, brownish, and iridescent tones. Because it is a natural material, variation in color and pattern is also something to confirm when selecting it.
