Improper Installation

Definition

Improper installation refers to a condition in which press fasteners, eyelets, cap and close posts, or similar items are attached to fabric by pressing, but the part combination, setting tool, pressure, or position is unsuitable, resulting in detachment, deformation, or reduced functionality.

Definition and applicable parts

Improper installation is a mounting defect that occurs in press fasteners, eyelets, cap and close posts, and similar press-attached apparel hardware. Even when it looks normal from the front side, the parts may not be sufficiently set, may be deformed, or may have unstable engagement.

Part combinations and size

Press-attached hardware is made up of multiple parts suited to the application, such as the front head and back washer, or the male side, female side, and spring. Even if the appearance and diameter are similar, combinations with different post lengths, shapes, or matching parts cannot be fixed securely.

Size is generally checked by the head or hole diameter, post length, and similar factors. However, even with the same stated diameter, suitability conditions differ by part configuration and manufacturer, so compatibility should not be judged by dimensions alone; check using the specified combination.

  • Diameter of the head or eyelet
  • Post length of the section that sandwiches the fabric
  • Compatibility between the male side, female side, washer, and other parts
  • Specifications and shape of the setting tool used

Installation with setting tools and presses

For installation, use a setting tool that matches the hardware shape, along with a hand press, foot-operated press machine, air press, or similar equipment. If the setting tool does not match, scratches or dents may appear on the head, the post may not be crushed evenly, and holding power may be insufficient.

Press pressure, stroke, the condition of the die bed, and the direction in which the hardware is placed also affect the finished result. Before mass production, perform trial setting with the actual fabric, interfacing, and layering specification, and check the front and back appearance, engagement, and resistance to pull-out and lateral force.

Compatibility with fabric and main precautions

On thin fabric, the post may be too long and the hardware may rotate easily. On thick fabric or layered sections, the post may not reach, making insufficient setting more likely. For stretch fabric, brushed fabric, and low-density woven fabric, check for fabric tearing and holding power, including the use of reinforcing cloth or interfacing.

Metal accessories may rust, develop green patina, or become discolored in plating due to moisture, sweat, washing, or contact with chemicals. It is important to clearly state in the specification sheet in advance whether nickel-free is required, the conditions for needle detector compatibility, and the washing and usage environment, and to verify them on the finished product.

Differences from similar terms

Improper installation is a defect focused on the installation process or installed condition. Insufficient engagement force refers to insufficient holding performance when the press fastener is fastened, and improper installation may be the cause. Pull-out strength and lateral pull strength are evaluation items for the strength of the installed hardware.

Fabric tearing and hardware detachment may appear as a result of improper installation, but causes may also include the fabric’s own strength, hardware selection, and usage conditions. When judging a defect, check the parts, setting tool, press conditions, and fabric specifications separately.

Frequently asked questions

What should be checked to prevent improper installation?

Check that each hardware part is combined as specified, that the setting tool used matches the hardware, and that the post length is appropriate for the total fabric thickness. Perform trial setting with the same fabric construction as mass production, and check the appearance, engagement, and pull-out condition.

What should be considered when attaching a press fastener to thin fabric?

On thin fabric, the hardware post may be too long, making improper installation more likely, such as the hardware rotating, lifting, or coming off after setting. Select parts that match the fabric thickness, and if necessary, check installation strength and fabric tearing with interfacing or reinforcing cloth added.

Is improper installation related to needle detector compatibility?

Needle detector compatibility is mainly a specification related to metal detection, and it does not prevent improper installation itself. However, to avoid missing chipped hardware or mixed-in parts, manage parts during the process and perform needle detection on the finished product, together with visual inspection of the installed condition and strength checks.
