Microcapsule Finishing
Microcapsule finishing is a finishing process that encapsulates fragrances, moisturizing ingredients, temperature-responsive ingredients, and the like in tiny capsules and attaches them to fabric to add functionality.

Definition and Overview
Microcapsule finishing is a process that applies capsules with contents enclosed in tiny shells to the surface of fabric and other materials. It includes designs that release the contents in response to friction, pressure, heat, moisture, and similar triggers, as well as designs in which the capsules themselves provide functionality.
It is not the name of the fibers or woven/knitted structure that make up the fabric, but rather a type of finishing process that adds functionality in a later step. Even with the same name, the contents of the capsules, the fixation method, and the release mechanism differ from process to process.
Characteristics and Appearance
Because the finishing agent adheres to the surface of the fabric, the hand may become somewhat stiffer than in an unprocessed product, and the smoothness and moist feel may change. The extent of the change depends on the base fabric, the amount applied, and the type of fixation resin called a binder.
In many cases, it is processed so that there is little visible change in appearance. However, in dark colors, lightweight fabrics, or smooth fabrics with little fuzz, whitening, differences in gloss, or surface roughness may become noticeable, so actual samples should be checked.
- Designs that release fragrance
- Designs that use changes in temperature for feel or heat absorption and release
- Designs intended to provide moisture retention, a cool feel, insect resistance, and similar effects
Main Applications
It is used in apparel, bedding, innerwear, and sports or outdoor products that highlight fragrance or comfort during wear. Suitable items vary depending on the contents, and for products worn close to the skin, evaluation including safety, odor, and wash durability is important.
Seasonality also varies depending on the contents. Products intended to provide a cool feel or insect resistance are often used for spring and summer, while those that use temperature changes may be used to study comfort throughout the year. It is important not to judge applications or performance from the process name alone.
Selection and Handling Precautions
When selecting, confirm what is enclosed, what trigger causes the function to appear, and how much function remains after washing, together with the test conditions of the processor. Because shrinkage and dimensional change are also greatly affected by the material and structure of the base fabric, prototype testing and wash testing should be performed on the fabric after processing.
In sewing, strong friction from the presser foot and feeding parts, or excessive pressing, may affect the capsules or the surface finish. Check whitening, abrasion, and the appearance around the needle holes using sewn samples, and verify in advance the ironing temperature, steam, and pressing cloth conditions.
In home laundering, strong friction, bleach, and high-temperature drying may reduce processing performance and hand. The care label for the final product should be set based not only on the base fabric but also on the durability of the finishing agent and handling conditions.
Differences from Similar Terms
Softening finish mainly aims to smooth the fiber surface and improve hand, and its concept differs from microcapsule finishing, which encapsulates contents and designs their release or response.
Moisture-absorbing heat generation and cool to the touch are functional names that indicate heat and moisture properties resulting from the material or processing of the fabric. Microcapsule finishing may use ingredients related to those functions, but it does not refer to the function itself; it refers to the technology that retains and applies the ingredients.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do the functions of microcapsule finishing continue after washing?
Wash durability varies greatly depending on the contents, capsule shell, fixation method, base fabric, and washing conditions. The function does not necessarily last forever. Check data tested under the expected number of washes and washing methods, and evaluate the hand and function on product samples as well.
Can fabric with microcapsule finishing be sewn?
It can usually be sewn, but the finishing agent adhered to the surface may change due to friction or heat. Before sewing, make samples using the sewing machine, thread, needle, presser foot, and pressing conditions to be used, and check whitening, abrasion, puckering, and any effect on functionality around the seams.
