Definition and role

A size label is an apparel accessory item that shows sizes such as S, M, L, or numerical sizes. It is used for the wearer to identify the garment size, and its role differs from a woven label that indicates the brand name and a care tag that indicates material and handling instructions.

There are also ready-made items with size markings printed continuously on tape, which are cut apart and used as needed for each required indication. It is important to match the displayed content to the planned size categories and maintain consistency with the sales description and the measurement chart.

Positioning in product development

Size labels are managed through the process from accessory selection to specification sheet preparation, sewing, and inspection. At the planning stage, decide the size system, label text, label type, attachment position, and sewing direction, then specify them in the specification sheet and instruct the factory.

In sewing, they are often attached near the brand label or care tag, but the position is determined according to the product design and wearing comfort. Where the label touches the skin, attention must also be paid to edge irritation and the stiffness of the sewn area.

  • Finalize the labeling system
  • Specify the attachment position, front/back, and orientation
  • Instruct the sewing method and how it extends into the seam allowance
  • Check appearance and skin feel with a sample

Ordering and workflow

When using a ready-made size label, confirm the required size markings, tape width, direction of the markings, and the number of labels per roll or continuous pitch. Calculate the required quantity including not only production volume but also losses during cutting and sewing, plus spare stock.

When making a custom order, finalize the design data, text content, typeface, base color and text color, finished dimensions, and folding or cutting specifications early. Because the content differs by size, compare the notation for all sizes in a list during proofreading.

Quality checks and precautions

At receiving and during product inspection, check for wrong size, upside down, reversed front/back, missing characters, dirt, fraying, and misaligned attachment position. A mistaken size label can lead to returns and incorrect shipments after sales, so it is important to separate them by size and manage them so they do not get mixed on the production floor.

Also check for difficulty reading the marking due to washing or friction, fraying at the tape edge, and loose sewing thread. In particular for infant products and underwear, individually confirm skin irritation, the risk of detachment that could lead to accidental swallowing, and the laws and voluntary standards related to the target product.

Differences from similar terms

Woven label generally refers to a label that expresses the brand name, logo, or planning name by weaving. The main purpose of a size label is to communicate the size, and in some cases the two are attached as separate parts, while in other cases they are combined into one label.

A care tag is a label used to convey fiber composition, handling instructions, and the party responsible for the labeling. A hang tag is a paper tag attached to a product at the time of sale; it may include the size, but it is distinct from a size label sewn onto the garment itself.

Frequently asked questions

Can a size label and a woven label be combined?

There are specifications that combine the brand indication and size indication on a single label. However, check with a sample that the text does not become too small to read, that front/back and size are not easily confused during sewing, and that there are no problems with skin feel.

What are the minimum items to confirm when ordering a size label?

Confirm the size marking content, tape width or finished dimensions, base color and text color, text direction, cutting specifications, quantity, and delivery date. For continuous tape, also confirm the pitch for each marking and the number of labels per roll, and calculate the required quantity.

How can size label attachment mistakes be prevented?

Show the label content and attachment position by size in the specification sheet, and approve with the actual sample before sewing. On the production floor, separate materials by size and check both during sewing and at final inspection that the product dimensions match the indicated size.
