Definition and Overview

Vertical fading is a vertical color-fading effect seen on the surface of denim and similar fabrics. In particular, it refers to a condition in which surface dye on yarn that is not dyed through to the core wears off through use and washing, creating light and dark streaks along the warp yarns.

Visual and Texture Characteristics

Because dark and light areas appear in an irregular sequence, it creates a sense of dimension and aged character that differs from flat fading. Yarn irregularity, weave structure, dyeing method, washing process, and friction during wear all affect the appearance.

Vertical fading is a term for appearance and does not directly indicate the fabric's stretch, absorbency, or durability. Even polyester-blend knit or tricot fabrics can be printed to create a denim-like vertical fading effect.

Main Applications

It is used for jeans, jackets, shirts, skirts, and similar items made from indigo denim. It is commonly used in workwear and vintage-inspired designs to make use of the material's character as part of the design.

On printed fabrics, a vertical fading pattern may be used for cut-and-sew items, leggings, costumes, and other products that seek a denim-like look while also requiring light weight or stretch. Seasonality is determined by the fabric thickness, composition, and construction.

Selection and Handling Precautions

When selecting actual color-fading denim, check the color difference after washing, color transfer to other products, and shrinkage rate. Even with the same vertical fading effect, the appearance varies depending on the processing strength and lot, so it is important to confirm with an actual sample and a washing test before mass production.

When cutting, align the grain accurately and check the color tone and visibility of the streaks on the left and right body panels, pockets, and other parts. With fabrics that have large differences between dark and light areas, the difference in appearance between parts may stand out. If product washing is performed after sewing, also pay attention to color transfer from the sewing thread and trims, shrinkage, and puckering.

  • For the first wash, wash separately and avoid washing with light-colored items.
  • Long soaking and strong friction may cause unintended fading or color transfer.
  • A printed vertical fading effect changes differently from the actual fading of denim.

Differences from Similar Terms

Vertical fading describes how color fading appears, while denim is generally a fabric name for twill-woven material. Even denim does not necessarily show vertical fading.

Indigo dyeing refers to the method or state of dyeing in blue-toned colors, while vertical fading is the appearance that emerges afterward through wear and washing. Used processing is a general term for processing that gives new products or fabrics a worn-in feel through washing, abrasion, and similar treatments, and it may include vertical fading effects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is vertical fading used for fabrics other than denim?

Originally, it is a term often used for the color-fading effect of denim. However, today it is also used for knit and tricot fabrics that are printed or processed to show denim-like vertical streaks of light and dark areas. In such cases, it is checked separately from actual fading caused by washing.

What should be noted when washing denim that tends to show vertical fading?

Indigo-dyed denim may transfer color through washing or friction. In principle, wash it separately, and also be careful with contact with light-colored clothing, bags, chairs, and similar items. Since shrinkage and the degree of fading vary depending on the fabric and finish, confirm with a preliminary test.
