Definition and Overview

A hanger loop is a loop-shaped accessory for hanging garments on a hanger while helping prevent loss of shape and slipping. It is often attached in a position that is hard to see from the front of the garment, and it serves to make the item easier to handle during storage, inspection, and display in stores.

It is also called a skirt hanger or hanging strap. However, the name varies depending on the specification or trading partner, and in some cases it may be called a skirt hanger only for skirt-specific items.

Location and Function

For skirts and dresses, a pair is attached near the side seams on the inside waist area and hung on the shoulder ends or clip section of a hanger. For heavy garments, check the hanging position and how the load is borne by the main body so that stress is not concentrated on the sewn section.

For jackets, coats, knits, and similar items, some specifications attach a single loop to the inside back neckline. Rather than hanging the shoulder seam or neckline directly on the hanger, it may be used to reduce stretching and loss of shape.

Materials and Types

Materials include polyester and nylon tape, braided cord, knit tape, and narrow elastic tape. Select according to the weight of the garment, washing conditions, feel against the skin, and compatibility with the outer fabric or lining.

Flat tape is easy to sew in, while cord-like types are thin and less noticeable. Elastic types make hanging easier, but it is necessary to check recovery and changes over time.

Main Applications

It is mainly used for garments that are difficult to support at the shoulders, such as skirts, dresses, and camisoles. For thin fabrics, slippery materials, or garments with narrow straps, it may be provided as an aid to prevent the item from falling off the hanger.

In addition to sales display, it is also used when hanging products during sewing processes and storage before shipment. However, since the hanger loop itself is not a carrying handle, it is important not to apply excessive load.

How to Choose and Sewing Precautions

Width, length, elasticity, and strength should match the shape of the hanger and the product weight. If the loop is too short, it will be difficult to hang; if too long, it may be visible from the outside or hang down during wear. Check with an actual hanger on a prototype.

The sewn ends are usually inserted into seam allowances such as the waist belt, facing, or lining. To prevent pullout from tension, check the strength of the seam allowance, the amount of insertion, and the sewing direction, and reinforce with bar tacking if necessary.

Synthetic fiber tape cut with heat may have hard cut edges or feel irritating. Where it may touch the skin side, check the edge treatment and how it sits in the seam allowance, and also evaluate fraying, stretching, and discoloration after washing.

Differences from Similar Terms

A belt loop is a part used to pass a belt through and keep the waist position, and it differs in purpose and attachment position from a hanger loop, which is used to hang a garment on a hanger. Another difference is that belt loops are visible on the outside, while hanger loops are often attached on the inside.

Looper may refer generally to loop-shaped accessories made from cord or tape. A hanger loop is a term that specifically refers to one used for hanging on a hanger for storage or display.

FAQ

Are a hanger loop and a skirt hanger the same thing?

In many cases, a hanger loop used to hang a skirt on a hanger is called a skirt hanger. However, hanger loops are also used for items other than skirts, so in specifications it is best to clearly state the attachment position, whether it is on both sides, the material, and the finished length to avoid misunderstandings.

How do you determine the length of a hanger loop?

Set the length so it can be hung easily on the shoulder ends or clips of the hanger in use and does not easily show on the outside when worn. The proper value changes depending on the product size, hanger shape, and elasticity, so it is important to check ease of hanging and appearance with the actual item before mass production.

Can elastic tape be used for a hanger loop?

Yes. Elasticity makes it easier to hang and remove, but with heavy products it may be less stable because of stretching. Check in advance for recovery after washing or storage, load on the sewn section, and fraying at the tape ends.
