Definition and Overview

Ozone treatment is a process that uses the oxidizing power of ozone gas to fade the color of dyed products and fabrics. In indigo-dyed denim, it is used to create a lightened tone with reduced blueness, or a worn-in faded look that resembles repeated wear.

The process can be applied not only at the fabric stage but also to finished products after sewing. In product processing, fading appears differently at seams, edges, and thicker areas, making it easier to create a dimensional look.

Texture and Appearance Characteristics

It is often combined with washing, and after processing, the fabric may feel less stiff and take on a more broken-in texture. However, softness and the degree of fabric damage vary depending on the material, dye, processing conditions, and after-treatment.

The fading can be made relatively even across the whole item, or uneven tones can be left in specific areas. This is a process that removes dye to create expression, and its purpose differs from treatments such as brushing or resin finishing, which add another layer to the fiber surface.

  • It is especially effective for creating texture with dyes that fade easily through oxidation, such as indigo.
  • Because hue and depth change before and after processing, color matching requires care.
  • Depending on the processing conditions, the fabric strength and accessories should be checked for any impact.

Main Applications

Typical applications include denim pants, jackets, shirts, skirts, and dresses. Beyond denim, it may also be used for casual clothing that aims for a vintage tone using pigment dyeing or sulfur dyeing.

Because it can give the appearance of lightness and aging, it may be adopted for light-colored spring and summer collections. On the other hand, since it does not change the fabric's thickness itself or its warmth, seasonality should be judged together with the material and item design.

Selection and Handling Notes

During planning, check not only the processing sample but also color differences in mass production, shrinkage rate, and the fading condition of sewn areas. Even with the same material name, the finish changes depending on the dye, dyeing method, and lot, so it is important to conduct advance tests on both the untreated fabric and the finished product.

Processed products may change color further with repeated washing. Follow the care label instructions, and handle them with the assumption of color transfer and abrasion-based fading, such as avoiding washing with light-colored items, washing inside out, and avoiding heavy friction during wear or storage.

In sewing, confirm whether the sewing thread, interlining, zipper, and metal accessories can withstand the processing conditions. When processing is applied to the finished product, evaluate the final result with a prototype, including accessory discoloration, surface deterioration, and puckering near the seams.

Differences from Similar Terms

Stone wash is a process that adds friction by washing with pumice stones or similar materials to create fading and a worn look. Ozone treatment differs in that it mainly fades color through oxidation, rather than being a process centered on surface change caused by friction.

Bleaching is a general term for processes that remove color using bleach or similar agents. Ozone treatment is also a type of fading process, but its defining feature is the use of ozone. Do not judge the final appearance by the process name alone; check the color and texture with a processing sample.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does denim treated with ozone shrink?

The degree of shrinkage cannot be determined uniformly from ozone treatment alone. It depends on whether washing and drying are involved during processing, and on the material and whether shrink-proof treatment has been applied. Before mass production, test the dimensions after processing, shrinkage after washing, and twisting, and reflect the results in the specifications.

Can ozone treatment and stone wash be used together?

They can be used together. Ozone treatment adjusts overall fading, while stone wash adds abrasion marks and a rough texture, so they are combined according to the desired appearance. However, testing is needed at each stage to avoid fabric damage and color variation.
