Definition and Overview

Polynosic is a type of regenerated fiber made by regenerating cellulose. It is classified as rayon, but it is characterized by improving the internal structure of the fiber to enhance strength in wet conditions and dimensional stability.

As it is the name of a fiber rather than a fabric, the appearance and performance of the finished fabric can vary greatly depending on the weave structure such as plain weave or twill, yarn thickness, density, blend ratio, and finishing.

Texture and Function

This material tends to produce a smooth, supple hand and an elegant look with good drape. It has moisture absorbency and may give a softer feel against the skin than synthetic fibers.

Compared with ordinary rayon, it is less likely to lose strength when wet and tends to reduce shrinkage and distortion after washing. However, the degree of these characteristics varies depending on the weave or knit structure, finishing process, and blending with other materials.

Luster, drape, and firmness are adjusted through the yarn and processing design. In lightweight fabrics, it is easy to take advantage of the airy feel, while in medium-weight fabrics it is used for applications that balance drape and moderate stability.

Main Applications

It is used for clothing that emphasizes drape and hand feel, such as blouses, shirts, dresses, skirts, and pants. In addition to use on its own, it may also be blended with cotton, polyester, and others to adjust the texture, strength, drying speed, and ease of handling.

Because it makes use of moisture absorbency and a crisp feel, it is often used for spring and summer clothing, but depending on the thickness and structure of the material, it can also be used for year-round items. When choosing it for applications, do not judge only by the season; check fabric weight, sheerness, and drape.

  • Blouses, dresses, and skirts that make use of drape
  • Shirts and lightweight clothing that emphasize hand feel
  • Pants and sets with good drape

Selection and Handling Notes

When selecting a fabric, check not only the fiber name Polynosic but also the blend ratio, fabric weight, density, care label, shrinkage rate, and wash fastness. Since the hand feel and dimensional change differ depending on whether garment washing is applied and on finishing conditions, it is important to conduct tests and washing checks before mass production.

Even though it tends to be water resistant, cellulose-based fibers may shrink, wrinkle, or transfer color depending on washing conditions. Follow the care instructions, avoid long soaking, and reshape the item before drying after washing. Dark-colored items should also be checked by washing separately.

In sewing, fraying, seam slippage, and needle holes may stand out in thin or high-density fabrics. Perform sewing tests in advance, choose a fine needle and thread suitable for the fabric, and manage the seam allowance edges and grain direction.

Differences from Similar Terms

Rayon is a broad term for all regenerated cellulose fibers, and Polynosic is one type of rayon. Polynosic is handled as having higher wet strength and dimensional stability than ordinary rayon, but actual performance must be checked for each fabric design.

Modal is also a regenerated cellulose fiber designed with wet strength in mind, but its manufacturing technology and the position of its fiber characteristics differ from Polynosic. Lyocell is a regenerated fiber made by the solvent spinning method, and although it is also cellulose-based, it is a different fiber.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Polynosic different from rayon?

Polynosic is a type of rayon. Compared with ordinary rayon, it is known as a fiber with improved strength and dimensional stability when wet. However, shrinkage, wrinkling, and strength as a fabric vary depending on the structure, blend ratio, and processing, so check the test data and care label.

Can Polynosic fabric be machine washed at home?

Whether home washing is possible is not determined by Polynosic alone. The appropriate care differs depending on the blended materials, weave or knit structure, dyeing, trims, and tailoring. Always follow the care label on the fabric or product, and for mass production, check dimensional change and appearance under the intended washing conditions.
