Definition and Position

A collar stay is a narrow component used mainly in shirt collars with a stand collar, at the tip of the collar point. It helps prevent the collar tip from curling inward, flaring outward, or lifting, and keeps the neckline looking neat.

In general, it is inserted into a pocket-shaped sleeve made on the underside of the collar point. Many are removable and cannot be seen from the outside of the collar. Because its purpose is to maintain the shape of the collar, it is not an accessory meant to be displayed.

Shape and Attachment Specifications

The basic shape is a narrow strip, and there are versions with rounded tips to match the angle of the collar point, as well as versions with squared tips. The length, width, and tip shape must match the size of the collar point and the pocket dimensions.

For removable types, insert them through the pocket opening on the underside of the collar and remove them before washing or dry cleaning. There are also types in which the core material is fixed inside the collar, but these differ in that they cannot be replaced or removed.

  • Pocket type: Can be inserted, removed, or replaced as needed.
  • Fixed type: Attached inside the collar and less likely to be lost.
  • Magnetic type: Some are used to shape the collar point with magnetic force, but their structure differs from the usual insert type.

Materials and Finish

Materials include resin and metal. Resin types are light and tend to reduce pressure against the collar. Metal types can hold their shape even when thin, and are used with smooth surface finishes.

To avoid damaging the fabric at the collar point, check that there are no sharp corners or edges and that the surface has no splinters or deformation. In particular, with thin shirts, items that are too hard or too thick may show through the collar point.

How It Matches with Dress and How to Use It

Collar stays are used to shape the collars of business shirts and dress shirts. They may be chosen for business wear during the day or for occasions such as celebrations when a neat collar appearance is desired, but they are not required for wearing a shirt and are used according to the shirt specification and collar condition.

For evening formal wear, depending on the collar construction, such as a wing collar worn with a tuxedo, a regular collar stay may not be used. More than the distinction between formal, semi-formal, and informal wear, first check whether the shirt collar has stay pockets.

When using them, lay the collar flat and insert the stay straight into the pocket opening all the way to the end. Align the type and direction on both sides, then check the collar point shape before tying the tie.

Selection and Handling Notes

When selecting, first check whether there are collar point pockets, the inside dimensions of the pockets, and the length to the collar point. If they are too long, they will force the pocket opening wider; if they are too short, they will not hold the collar point well. Thickness also affects compatibility with the collar fabric and interlining.

Before washing, drying, ironing, or dry cleaning, be sure to remove removable collar stays. Leaving them in may cause deformation, damage to the fabric, or damage to other garments or the washing machine. To prevent loss, store removed stays as matching left and right pairs.

Differences from Similar Terms

Collar interlining is a general term for interlining or core material used to maintain the shape of the entire collar or part of the collar. A collar stay refers specifically to the narrow component that is mainly inserted into the collar point pocket. Shirt interlining broadly refers to interlining used in shirt collars, cuffs, front plackets, and other parts, and is distinguished from the collar stay itself.

A collar bar is a dress accessory that connects the left and right sides of the collar with hardware and lifts the tie knot. It differs from a collar stay, which supports the collar point from inside the collar, in visible position, purpose, and attachment method.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do collar stays need to be removed before washing?

For removable types, remove them before washing or dry cleaning. Leaving them in may cause the stay to deform, damage the fabric at the collar point or the pocket, or snag other garments inside the washing machine. If you are unsure whether they are fixed types, check the pocket opening on the underside of the collar.

What is the difference between a collar stay and collar interlining?

Collar interlining is a general term for interlining or core material used to maintain the shape of a collar. A collar stay specifically refers mainly to the narrow, removable component inserted into the pocket on the underside of the collar point to prevent the collar point from flaring or lifting.

Can collar stays be used in any shirt?

They are used in shirts that have collar stay pockets on the underside of the collar. They cannot be forced into a collar without a pocket. Button-down collars and soft collars may also be designed without the assumption of stays, so it is important to follow the shirt's original specification.
