Definition and parts

Cuffs are the strip-like switched section attached to the shirt cuff opening. They help shape the cuff opening and keep the wrist measurement stable. Single cuffs and double cuffs are classified mainly by how the cuff overlaps and how it is fastened.

Single cuffs are single-layer cuffs, and the front edges are usually overlapped and fastened with buttons. Double cuffs refer to cuffs that are folded outward into a double layer, with the buttonholes on both sides overlapped and fastened with cufflinks.

Shape and fastening

Because the folded edge of double cuffs is visible on the wrist side, they give the cuff opening more thickness and presence. There are styles with straight corners and styles with rounded corners, and they are chosen to match the overall collar shape, front opening specification, and wearing occasion of the shirt.

In addition to standard button fastening, single cuffs also include convertible cuffs that can take cufflinks. This style allows both buttons and buttonholes to be used, so it can normally be button-fastened and switched to cufflink fastening as needed.

  • Single cuffs: Single-layer construction, with button fastening as standard.
  • Double cuffs: Folded into a double layer and fastened with cufflinks.
  • Convertible cuffs: A style that supports both button fastening and cufflink fastening.

Materials and finishing

Cuffs are often made from the same shirt textile as the body and sleeves, using materials such as cotton or polyester blends. Smooth solid white textile is often used for formal shirts, while woven-patterned or colored textile is used to suit the look of the outfit.

Because double cuffs need to retain an appropriate shape in the folded section, the type of interfacing and the bonding conditions affect the finished result. If it is too stiff, it can restrict wrist movement; if it is too soft, the fold can become distorted easily, so the combination of outer fabric and interfacing is checked.

How they match with attire

Double cuffs are often used for evening formal wear such as tuxedos, and are paired with formal shirt specifications such as wing collars, pleated fronts, and concealed placket construction. The required attire varies depending on day or night, invitation instructions, and regional or ceremonial customs.

Single cuffs are widely used from business shirts to semi-formal wear. Double cuffs are not limited to evening attire, but because cufflinks are used, it is important to match the level of formality of the shirt, jacket, and accessories.

Selection and handling notes

When choosing a shirt, check the sleeve length so that the cuffs do not protrude unnaturally from the sleeve opening when wearing a jacket. Because double cuffs have extra thickness from the folded section, also check the wrist size, ease at the cuff opening, and the fastening shape of the cufflinks to be used.

Follow the product care label for washing and finishing. Always remove cufflinks before washing, and store them so that metal parts and decorations do not damage the cuff textile. Do not press the fold line too hard; shape it and then iron it.

Frequently asked questions

Are double cuffs and French cuffs the same?

In many cases, double cuffs and French cuffs refer to the same style, in which the cuff opening is folded back and fastened with cufflinks. However, the wording may differ in sales materials and specifications, so check whether there is a fold, the position of the buttonholes, and cufflink compatibility.

Are convertible cuffs double cuffs?

Convertible cuffs are generally treated as a single-cuff style that can be fastened with either buttons or cufflinks. Their structure differs from double cuffs, which are folded back into a double layer. In specifications, state the number of holes and whether buttons are included.

Can regular buttons be used on double cuffs?

Standard double cuffs are fastened with cufflinks through overlapping buttonholes, so they cannot be fastened with ordinary sewn-on buttons alone. If cufflinks are not available, check whether the shirt is a style that supports button fastening, such as convertible cuffs.
