Definition and Overview

JIS T 8127 is a standard for high-visibility safety clothing that makes workers easier to spot in places where vehicles pass and in dark areas. It combines fluorescent materials that stand out in daylight with retroreflective materials that reflect light back toward its source, making it easier to recognize the wearer’s presence.

The scope of the standard is finished safety clothing, not reflective tape alone. Even if retroreflective materials or fluorescent fabric have the performance related to the standard, conformity cannot be claimed for the clothing unless the area used, placement, and overall product specifications meet the requirements.

Materials and Construction

High-visibility safety clothing consists mainly of a fluorescent-colored base material and retroreflective materials. Woven fabrics, knitted fabrics, and similar materials are used for the base material, and retroreflective materials are often sewn on in tape form.

Reflective tape is generally placed around the torso, shoulders, sleeves, and legs in line with the movement of the clothing. However, compliance cannot be determined from the tape’s construction method, such as weaving, knitting, or braiding, or from width and thickness alone. It is necessary to confirm the finished product design and test results as well.

Applications and Label Verification

It is used in work with a risk of contact with vehicles or machinery, such as road construction, logistics, railways, airports, security, and guiding operations. The purpose is to make workers easier to recognize not only at night, but also at dusk, in rain, and in environments where they blend into the background.

When selecting materials, distinguish whether the label “conforms to JIS T 8127” refers to the material itself, such as reflective tape, or to clothing made using that material. If producing a finished product, confirm the basis for the label, the conditions of use, and performance after sewing.

  • In ordering specifications, make the clothing application, wearing environment, and required visibility clear.
  • Consider reflective materials together with color contrast and placement relative to the base material.
  • When making a conformity claim, confirm compliance with the standard requirements as a finished product.

Washing and Handling Precautions

Fluorescent materials and retroreflective materials may change in appearance and performance due to washing, friction, heat, chemicals, ultraviolet light, and other factors. In particular, for reflective tape, confirm the specified sewing method and handling conditions so that there is no damage from sewing needles, bending, peeling, or lifting at the edges.

Washing durability varies depending on the material and product specifications. Confirm whether home washing, industrial washing, and dry cleaning are allowed, as well as the number of washes permitted, and follow the care label. Because dirt can reduce fluorescence and reflectivity, inspect the condition regularly.

Differences from Similar Terms

Retroreflective materials are materials that have the property of returning light in the direction from which it came. JIS T 8127, on the other hand, is a standard that covers the requirements for high-visibility safety clothing that includes such materials. Ordinary clothing with reflective materials does not immediately conform to JIS T 8127.

EN ISO 20471 and ANSI 107 are also standards for high-visibility clothing, but the applicable regions, requirements, classifications, and labeling methods may differ. For products intended for overseas markets, confirm the standard required by the destination market individually.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I use reflective tape that conforms to JIS T 8127, will workwear also conform?

No. Since JIS T 8127 applies to finished high-visibility safety clothing, it is necessary to confirm not only the performance of the reflective tape, but also the performance of the fluorescent base material, the area and placement of each material, the clothing design, and performance after washing, in an overall manner.

What is the difference between JIS T 8127 and retroreflective materials?

Retroreflective materials are materials that easily reflect light from vehicle headlights and similar sources back toward the light source. JIS T 8127 is a standard that defines the product requirements for high-visibility safety clothing that uses retroreflective materials and fluorescent materials.

Does washing reduce the performance of high-visibility safety clothing?

Depending on the material and washing conditions, it may decrease. Peeling or damage to reflective materials, fading of fluorescent colors, and dirt buildup all affect visibility. It is important to follow the product care label and the specified conditions for the materials, and inspect the appearance before and after wear.
