(What is Kyoto's woven tortoiseshell?) Woven tortoiseshell is a technically processed three-layer structure consisting of two clear acrylic panels, materials such as woven fabric or Japanese paper between them, and acrylic resin that is encapsulated with the materials. By encapsulating the material in a natural state, rather than stretching it taut, the unevenness is expressed, allowing the charm of the textile and washi paper to be conveyed as is. Therefore, its appearance changes depending on how the light hits it, allowing you to enjoy a variety of expressions.
[What is Nishijin weaving?] Nishijin is a general term for high-quality silk fabrics woven in Kyoto's Nishijin district, and does not refer to a specific type of textile; the variety of fabrics produced is extremely large. It has woven numerous masterpieces, consistently led the way in Japanese tie-dyeing techniques, and is arguably the only place in Japan where weaving has continued for over 1000 years. Among textiles, jacquard weaving is a mainstream technique in Nishijin where the thread are dyed beforehand to create the woven pattern. Compared to post-dyed textiles where the white textile is dyed or printed piece dyed, jacquard weaving is characterized by its deep, luxurious expression.
